Sadly, the Chris Rainey “Time to Die” T-shirts are already being sold in Knoxville in preparation for this week’s game between the Florida Gators and Tennessee Volunteers.

Some fans are obviously sick people.

As everyone knows by now Rainey, a UF wide receiver, was arrested earlier this week on a third-degree felony after a dispute with a girlfriend. During the dispute, according to arrest records, Rainey sent the woman a text that said, “Time to Die …”

I was on Twitter yesterday and saw a dispatch from ESPN college football guru Joe Schad in which he directed his followers to Clay Travis of AOL Fanhouse, who tweeted this: “Had to happen. Orange ‘Time to Die’ tshirts have hit Knoxville for UT-UF.”

Travis also posted this picture of the T-shirts on his Twitter account.

Chris Rainey texting a “Time to Die” threat to his girlfriend is horrible, but some idiot making fun of the situation and trying to make a buck off of it is disgusting as well. Have we reached a point in college football — and society for that matter — when it is OK to make light of domestic abuse and death threats against women?

Hey, I’m all for lampooning college or professional athletes who run afoul of the law, but death threats and domestic abuse are not laughing matters.

And they certainly aren’t something you should put on the front of a T-shirt for fans to wear to a football game.

What a world.
